Birdwatching
|
Birdwatching can be a four-season activity at Weathertop Mountain Inn and the Mad River Valley. We have many year-round residents,
as well as seasonal visitors and migratory stopovers. As innkeepers, we are certainly not expert ornithologists, but we do
enjoy looking at the wide variety of feathered friends who choose to visit us.
The following is not meant to be a comprehensive list of the birds of Vermont. It is simply a list of those we have personally
observed. Thankfully, the list keeps growing. The "At The Inn" category is exactly that - birds we have seen at our feeders or
around our property. The "Near The Inn" category includes birds we have seen within a 5-mile radius of Weathertop.
Our definitions for sighting frequencies are based upon personal experience, utterly unscientific, but meaningful to us:
- Abundant: A large quantity can be seen every day
- Common: Can be seen on most days, but quantity can vary
- Uncommon: Can usually be seen within a few days
- Rare: A special sighting, elusive or migratory. Feel good & be thankful!
Come for a stay at Weathertop Mountain Inn and help us add to the list...

All of the bird photos shown above are provided for educational purposes, especially for those guests who may not be familiar
with the species being described. Our ultimate goal is to provide only photos that we have personally taken at Weathertop
Mountain Inn (in between cooking breakfasts, cleaning rooms, preparing dinners, and general inn maintenance...). For photos we
have not taken ourselves, credit is provided with the photo. There are many great internet websites and photographers who
share their photographic talents on a royalty-free basis, and we thank them for their courtesy.
A few we wish to thank include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), the USDA Wildlife Services (USDAWS), the US Federal Gov't (USFG), Dr. Dan Sudia of the Florida Museum of Natural History, Toledo-Bend Gallery, Ken Thomas and Nature's Pic's.
